1/21/14 gardening, Day 21/365…

We will have another garden this summer. We need to look at the seed packages and see when we need to start the seeds. Last year we saved two kinds of tomato seeds. We will try them to see if they sprout. This is our first try saving seeds. We have a small yard with a swing set in it so we have a small garden. We used to have three chickens so they had a large corner of the yard. Our yard is really too small for chickens so we gave them to a friend. They were named Millie, Hattie and Nettie. The kids called them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We miss them. We still have the chicken coop just in case we can get some chickens later.

We don’t really have enough time to garden so to cut down on the work we have eliminated hoeing. When we plant the garden we put layers of newspaper around the plants, about ten layers thick. Then we put compost over the paper, completely covering the paper, the weeds can’t grow through the paper and the paper falls apart throughout the growing season and is almost all gone at the fall cleanup. If a weed does grow we add more newspaper and compost. The paper and compost also help to keep the moisture in the ground around the plants. We connect the hose to the sprayer and turn it on and off in the basement.  I haven’t figured out how to harvest without going outside.

1/20/14 family pictures, Day 20/365…

I just went through some family pictures to try to find things to write about. The kids have only been back in school a week but we are already in a routine. Routines don’t make interesting blog posts. I love looking at the old pictures. There are so many memories. Sometimes we get out the boxes of pictures and go through them. Two of the kids have made small albums of their favorite pictures to keep in their rooms. When William graduated from high school he said that he was going to go away to school. I made a photo album for him to take. I was going to take a tape recorder and record all of us talking…maybe one night at dinner…when the kids didn’t know that I was recording. Then if he got homesick he would have the pictures and the recording. In the end he didn’t go away to college so I didn’t make the recording. I probably should. It would be nice to have their voices on tape for me to listen to someday when they all move out.

1/19/14 family reunions, Day 19/365…

It would be fun to have a family reunion. The last one that we had on my moms side not including funerals was when William was young before the girls were born. We met for a weekend in Kentucky. It was so nice to see everyone. We had time to relax together and really catch up. It had been planned in advance so a lot of people could get the time off for it. When we were young we used to get to see some of the relatives every year. We would go to my grandparents house each summer and a lot of times one of the other cousins families would be there too. We all grew up together. When the chance came up to go to the family reunion we went. It was so good to be able to catch up with some of the relatives.
My dads side of the family had reunions every year for years. They always met at the same park on the same day. They chose a weekend that has a Monday as a national holiday. They get together on the Sunday. Then the people from out of town can drive on Saturday and Monday. No one needs to miss work to be at the reunion. My dad’s aunt always set it up. When she passed away we stopped having reunions.
I like to take the kids to the reunions. They get to see the people that we have on our family tree that we are building on the dining room wall, and they can get to know them. 11810 We also go to the local cemeteries and see the graves of our relatives that have passed away. We tell the kids their relationship to them. They can see the houses and other sites from our families hometown. We are not from the town that we live in so it is nice to go back home and reconnect.
My kids aren’t thrilled that we go to the cemeteries or that we point out the same houses every time that we are there. But…it does give them a sense of their history and links them to our family. We do go on vacations that they think are fun too.
When we were young we moved a lot. Going to see our grandparents at the same house, on the same street, with the furniture in the same spots was our…or my…home. It was always familiar. We could move and we still had a familiar place to go back to. I didn’t mind moving, maybe because having an extended family made it easier.

1/18/14 kids in the car, and art supplies, Day 18/365…

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted lately. I’m back.

When the kids were little we were in the car a lot. We went on a lot of adventures on the weekends and a few trips to see relatives in the summers. The kids needed to all sit in the back seat because they weren’t tall enough or weighed enough for it to be safe for them to sit up front. All three kids always wanted the window seat, no one wanted to sit in the middle and have the bump by their feet. We started by having them sit in order, William by the passenger window, Maggie in the middle and Beth on the drivers side. Our first trip was short so they rode there in this order. On the way home William moved to the middle, Maggie went to the driver’s side and Beth went from the drivers window to the passenger window. On longer trips I tried to divide the trip into thirds each got the same amount of time in the middle. The biggest problem that we had was remembering where we left off. This did cut down on a lot of fights and bad feelings in the car.

Today we are going to get Maggie’s art supplies for her art class. We printed off some of her syllabuses last night because she has new classes. Beth will probably spend the day doing math. It snowed at least two inches late last week. There was enough snow that everything is white again, but not enough that we needed to shovel to get into the driveway. We do need to shovel the sidewalk. We need to do all of out weekend jobs today.

1/8/14 cell phone and adding a picture onto my blog, Day 8/365…

I have made more of a commitment to my cell phone. I am relatively new to cell phones, having mine for less than a year. This last month I got our family phone book and entered all of the numbers and addresses into my phone. I have my kids write all of their phones numbers and information into notebooks now and then…they have had phones longer than me. Then if their phone completely dies they have all of the numbers. I need to do this too. There are numbers in my phone that aren’t in the address book.

I tried to add a picture to one of my contacts in my phone. Before kids I could have done this alone, now with kids, I did try, but my daughter ended up cropping the picture and adding it for me. I do think that I can do the next one.

I had some free time and deleted all of the old messages on my phone. The wrong numbers are now gone. Next is the pictures. All of the ones that have been transferred to my blog need deleted.

We have another day off. The snow has stopped but the temperature is -13 deg before the wind chill and there is ice on the roads. Everything is down because of the ice. At this temperature, the salt won’t melt the ice.

Beth is doing math today. Maggie is cleaning her room and William is on the computer.

We added a picture to my blog. I thought that it would go in the top with the title, but it didn’t.

Here is a picture in our front yard with the sign in it. If it snows again it will be buried. We should bring it in so that no one falls on it and gets hurt.
Here is the girls fort.

1/6/14 ice skating, walking in the cemetery and a snow day, Day 6/365…

We went ice skating this last weekend. We took Beth’s boyfriend. It was busier that other times that we have gone. This time there were a lot of younger kids who were relatively new to skating. 1630c11

We went for a walk at the local cemetery the other day. This was the weekend before all of the snow started to fall. We like to wander around there. If some of the trees branches have fallen, we take them to the outside edges so that the city can pick them up the next time that they are there to mow the grass. Our cemetery has a lot of older head stones, a lot of the deceased dates are from around 1930. Some of them have been worn away by the weather. We have seen one new burial there since we moved into this house. Now and then someone puts flowers onto a grave. There is a buckeye tree in the cemetery so we go in the summer and collect buckeyes. marker marker 2 markers tree in cemetary

Today our town is shut down because of all of the snow. The kids were scheduled to start back to school today after the Christmas and New Years break. We shoveled twice yesterday and went inside at about 7:00 pm. We had the drive and the sidewalk clear. The drive is now full of snow up to the top of the drifts. It isn’t too cold out, about 14 deg, but it may get to – 15 tonight and – 5 tomorrow. The kids got some board games for Christmas, I am hoping to get to play them today.

1/4/14 shoveling and snow forts, Day 5/ 365…

We went outside to shovel today. There wasn’t much new snow, but there is a lot on the way. We shoveled about an inch or two of heavy, wet snow. Good snowball or fort making snow. The snow usually falls in individual flakes. Today it was falling in neighborhoods. c13 After shoveling our driveway we usually go and shovel the drives and sidewalks of the older people on our street. We live on a little dead end street and our drives and sidewalks aren’t that big, so this really isn’t a lot of shoveling. There used to be three older people to shovel for, now there is only one. It teaches the kids to help others, and it wears the kids out.

1/4/14 getting ready for the storm, Day 4/ 365…

We have been getting ready for the coming storm today. The storm may come in tomorrow. We should get about two inches of snow tonight and the temperature overnight should be about 27 deg. Tomorrow we may get six to twelve inches of snow and the arctic cold should come in. I have heard that this should be the coldest that it has been in the last twenty years.

We went to the big superstore, Meijer, today and there were no carts, the store was very full. Later we went to the grocery store. They had so many customers that they had set up an extra temporary check out line. They must have had an extra cash register because they set it up at the end of the line of the other registers. They had a table by the register for the customers to put their groceries on. An employee was going up to people in the self-check out lane and directing the customers with one, two or three items to this new line. They had a sign up calling it the “Express express” lane. The stores were busy in our town at Christmas, but they were even busier tonight. Everyone is taking this incoming storm very seriously.

1/1/14 older posts, the cat and the Christmas tree, family history, Day 1/ 365…

Happy New Year!!!

Here are some random posts that I had on my Nook while the power cord was lost:

written 12/15/13 Our little cat likes the Christmas tree. She is playing with it a little bit. The morning after we put the tree up there was a chair close to the tree with the back of the chair by the tree. She was standing on the back of the chair playing with one of the ornaments. I am not really worried that she will break an ornament. Most of our glass ornaments were broken when the kids were young. One of kids was reaching for a ornament on a higher branch when they were young and pulled really hard. The tree broke in half. No one was hurt. Most of the breakable ornaments were broken and lot of the lights broke. We bought a new tree and put the unbroken ornaments back on it. Now we make an ornament each year but it is usually the flat wooden ones that we decorate with markers and our names and the year. If the cat pulls down an ornament it probably won’t break, but some are decorated and she might eat part of it.
I have started making my New Years Resolutions. I am not sure if the kids make any. I remind them about making them each year, but they decide for themselves what they want to do. To me it is a good time to look back on where I am and where I want to be. I do this twice a year. Once at New Years and once at Easter. Jesus died for us and washed away our sins on Easter, so it is a good time to see if any changes are needed.

Tuesday 12.17.13 My mom has been recording some family history on the tape recorder. The first few days she recorded a lot, but now she records on it now and then. I need to get the recorder back from her and record the information on a second recorder so that it will be in two places.
It is about twenty five degrees today. By Friday it should be forty degrees and raining.
I was driving home yesterday and saw some kids walking home. While I was waiting at a stop light the kids came to a waist high pile of snow in their path. Instead of walking around it, they crawled over it and slid/rolled down it. They were having a great time. I remember being that young. We haven’t built a fort or had a neighborhood snow ball fight in years.

One of the best decisions that we made in the last year was to get a second cat. She has added so much to our family. I have made my New Years resolutions. There are twelve of them. Most of them involve helping my kids do something, so they will be ongoing.

12/29/13 We will probably take the Christmas tree down next weekend. It was forty-two degrees today. Yesterday the kids and I took a walk in the local cemetery. It was nice to get outside on a nice day. I had heard that this was going to be a cold and snowy winter, but it hasn’t been too bad so far…but we are only in December.

12/31/13 New Years Day, power cords, guitar class and rescuing the cat, Day 365/ 365…

Happy New Year!!! Each new year I like to take a look at the past year and see how it went. Last Sunday our Pastor suggested that we use the Bible verse from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (New Living Translation). He said to look at each season and see how it has affected your life in the past year. For example, in a time to be born, what have you started or begun to set up, or in a time to die, what have you finished or quit doing.

“1 For everything there is a season,

a time for every activity under heaven.

2 A time to be born and a time to die.

A time to plant and a time to harvest.

3 A time to kill and a time to heal.

A time to tear down and a time to build up.

4 A time to cry and a time to laugh.

A time to grieve and a time to dance.

5 A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.

A time to embrace and a time to turn away.

6 A time to search and a time to quit searching.

A time to keep and a time to throw away.

7 A time to tear and a time to mend.

A time to be quiet and a time to speak.

8 A time to love and a time to hate.

A time for war and a time for peace.” (Footnote 1)

I like to be everywhere. This last year I let go of some projects that weren’t helping our family. It is tough for me to end things. Sometimes I think that if we stay with them for a little longer they will work out. I don’t want to give up too early because a lot of things dopolka all stars two squirls
take some work. Letting go of these projects has given me more time for the helpful things that I am doing.

At the beginning of December I lost the power cord for my Nook. It was fully charged so I decided to keep using it and post the entries when the power cord was found. We have found the cord. I am now keeping the cord in a desk drawer.

Monday 12.2.13 I have lost the charging cord for my cell phone and the cord for my Nook. We saw the cords last week. Luckily the kids have a cord that will work on my phone. Charging cords at our house are like sox, they keep getting lost.
Maggie had her last day of guitar today. She was releived. She liked the other students and the teachers, but wasn’t thrilled with the guitar. Her other classes don’t end until the end of the year.

Monday 12.16.13 The smaller cat got caught in Maggie’s dresser yesterday. It is a built in dresser. When Maggie pulled out the bottom drawer the cat climbed in the dresser drawer and then back behind it. We tried to call the cat to get her out, sometimes she comes when we call her. She didn’t come out this time. We tried to reach in, over the back of the drawer and get her. We couldn’t get her. Then we got their cat food dish and shook it to see if she would come out to eat. She didn’t. Next we tried the cat nip. She tried to climb out but didn’t have anything to push off of with her back legs. We gently started to close the drawer some until she was able to use the back of the dresser as a base to push off of and she was able to get out. We were all very happy that she was safe. The cat wasn’t upset by the experience because she tried to climb back in later.
