12/5/16 growing up and field trips…

William has suddenly grown up a lot. He has started doing the laundry without being asked and he shaved this month after being asked one time. He will only shave once a month.
Beth went to a town about two hours away last Saturday with one of her friends. He doesn’t drive either so his mom, and another lady went with them. Beths friends girlfriend had moved and they were going to see her. They left at about nine in the morning and were coming back that same day. This is one of her first trips that was not organized by the school, that Beth has gone on without me. They stopped for lunch. Beth said that they had the best pizza that she had ever had. I asked if it was because she was really hungry, she said no it really was great pizza. They got back at about five o’clock. Beth had had a good time. We went to church on Saturday evening because Beth was back and Maggie was volunteering on Sunday.
Maggie went volunteering with her Enviromental Science group last Sunday. She needs to join a club. College isn’t just going to class, she needs some friends. Maggie left the campus with about four students and the teacher in a van. Maggie remembered to bring a drink and a snack without me having to remind her. That was cool. When we got to the campus to the meeting place, no one was there.Maggie was a bit worried. We were about fifteen minutes early. She said that maybe they were meeting inside. I parked and she went to find the group, she left her drink and snacks in the car. She came back a few minutes later saying that she had found them. She took her snack and water and left.
When I picked up Maggie about four hours later she looked so alive and happy. They had cut down the xxxxxx bush which grows to about forty feet tall and grows wild in the area. Maggie told me the name of what they were cutting down. When I talk to the kids I can’t take notes as we talk but by the time I try to write it down, I have forgotten all of the important words.  There had been about ten or fifteen students, one teacher and one man that put something on the stumps after one was cut down so that they didn’t sprout again. They used hedge clippers to cut them down, so the trunks must have been small. Maggie said that the teacher directed them where to cut. When they had some cut they put them into big piles. She thought that the fire department would come in and do a controlled burn go get rid of the piles. The teacher gave them extra credit points for each hour that they stayed. The group cuts these plants down on the first and third Sunday of the month. Maggie had a great time and wants to go back. When we got home I asked her to write on the calendar the information about the next chance to volunteer.
When the kids were  little I wrote everything on the calendar. Slowly I have let the kids write their own events on the calendar. At first they wrote everything too big. If there event was only for an hour there wasn’t room to write in a second event. They have gotten a lot better with time.

7/13/16 drivers permits – part one…

Maggie and Beth got their drivers permits yesterday. We were all so excited. William isn’t ready to get his permit yet. I took Beth driving first. She was really apprehensive but has been driving go carts at school for three years.
She was thrilled and scared to get into the drivers seat. She wants to drive so badly but doesn’t want to try anything new. We said a prayer before she started and then I gave a short talk. The car is a two thousand pound moving piece of metal. The main goal is that in the end she is unharmed, the people with her are unharmed and everyone around her is unharmed. I talked about keeping an eye on what is around her. If a small child runs into the middle of the road, she needs to know if the other lane has a car so she can go quickly into that lane. We went over the turn signals and lights. She has never sat in the drivers seat so she needed to know what was what. We also looked at the heater and all the choices for heat and window defogging. The whole talk lasted less that five minutes.
I think that the most important part of driving is stopping. We have a place by us where there used to be a mall. The mall is taken down but the road around it and one parking lot are still there and in good shape. I had Beth drive a few feet in the parking lot and stop. She did that over and over for about fifteen minutes. Her stops became very controlled and not jerky. She was ready for the surrounding road. We pulled out and started driving around. She is a good driver. There is some traffic on that road. The business surrounding the mall are still there, but there was almost no traffic today. She was able to keep the car in the lane, not pulling to either side. I got out my phone to take a picture of her driving. She was so thrilled that I was comfortable enough with her driving that I would get out my phone. That was her moment of triumph, being trusted with me looking away. We went around the mall once and went back into the parking lot. She turned off the car and we traded places. She was very happy. We went back home and I picked up Maggie.

5/31/16 temporary agencies and college…

William was accepted by the temporary agency. Yes I was worried. They had a lot of questions to answer and I know that he is happy not working until he finds the right job. He does want to work. I am not sure how he answered the questions. He must have answered them OK because they sent him forms to fill out. Woo hoo, cheer, cheer!!! One step closer to having William working.

Maggie got her official acceptance letter from the college today. It had a new list of things to do on it. I told Maggie that she needed to handle the list. She needs to be part of the process. I will still be going to the university to ask the questions too just to be sure that she is OK. She is still struggling to pass high school. I wasn’t sure if she should handle the new list, it had items like, sign up for orientation and have your high school transfer your grades to the college, or if I should handle the list and let her concentrate on her classes. In the end I had her handle the new items too, I said that I am here if she needs anything.

1/22/14 senior year wrap-up, Day 22/365…

Maggie is a senior. The crunch is on. She has a lot of homework to do, but she also has a lot “senior” work to do to. She needs letters of recommendation from her teachers. The teachers want a list of her clubs / accomplishments and volunteer work so that they can write correct letters. Maggie can use these letters when she signs up for scholarships. She also needs to apply for two scholarships by this Friday. The students are required to do this so that they have had practice while an adviser is there to help. She is signed up to take the ACT already and she has finished her volunteer hours and cultural events and turned them into her adviser. The senior group picture is scheduled for this Friday. She talked to the counselor today to make sure that she hasn’t missed anything.

Maggie is very calm about all of the work that needs to be done. I am so worried that we will miss something. What are your projects that you are doing with your kids this year?

Thanks for stopping by! Come back tomorrow and see what new adventures we have found!!!

1/20/14 family pictures, Day 20/365…

I just went through some family pictures to try to find things to write about. The kids have only been back in school a week but we are already in a routine. Routines don’t make interesting blog posts. I love looking at the old pictures. There are so many memories. Sometimes we get out the boxes of pictures and go through them. Two of the kids have made small albums of their favorite pictures to keep in their rooms. When William graduated from high school he said that he was going to go away to school. I made a photo album for him to take. I was going to take a tape recorder and record all of us talking…maybe one night at dinner…when the kids didn’t know that I was recording. Then if he got homesick he would have the pictures and the recording. In the end he didn’t go away to college so I didn’t make the recording. I probably should. It would be nice to have their voices on tape for me to listen to someday when they all move out.

1/15/14 ACT, temperature changes, Day 15/365…

Maggie and Beth are now scheduled to take the ACT. They need to take it their senior year so that the colleges have their test scores, but we are having Beth take it this year as a practice run. ACT dates

We didn’t realize that we needed the girl’s current grade point average (GPA), their rank in their class and the number of students in their class. We got this information from the secretary at the girls schools. I was going to sign the girls up for the test while Maggie was at school, she stays late to study, but there is a section where they want the kids preferences, so I needed her to be at home. So the first night, when we had everybody home, we started to sign them up and found out that we needed the grade point average. We got the GPA and all of the other information the next day and I started to sign them up while Maggie was at school. Then we found out that the kids needed to answer some of the questions. We needed Maggie for this. The next day I said to Maggie, let me pick you up earlier, you can come home and help me schedule the test and then if you want I can take you back to school. So that day I waited in the parking lot…and Maggie didn’t show up…at the end of this story everything is OK…I waited for a half hour. Maggie is never more that five minutes late to the car. I called home, she hadn’t called there. What do I do, go to the computer rooms where she usually goes, or wait for her??? or go home because she has forgotten and come back at our normal time???  I decide to go to the computer rooms. She is not there so I go back to the car and decide to go home and come back later. While waiting at the stop sign for my turn to pull out into the street I see Maggie. She gets in and says that she had a class that she had forgotten about. She has only just scheduled her classes and is still not sure of her schedule. She came to the parking lot before class to see if I was there early and then went to class. A good choice. We went home and scheduled her. Also I forgot to mention that they need a photo uploaded to verify that the correct student is there. We took the photo and sent it, then we took Maggie back to school. Later I went back to get her. If you are new to my blog, none of my kids want to drive. It is nice because I get to spend more time with them and meet all of their friends, but it is a lot of driving. I like getting to spend a lot of time with them.

This week it has been about forty degrees. Last week with the wind chill it was forty degrees below zero. It is eighty degrees warmer this week than last week.

1/14/14 scheduling classes and finals, Day 14/365…

Maggie got all of her classes scheduled today. She is happy wih her schedule. I am so relieved that she is done. At the last parent meeting they said that we should get a copy of all of their syllabuses. Then we could know when papers are due and when tests are. Then if we see that a big test is coming up and our kids are not studying, we can ask our kids about the upcoming test. It is not to follow their every assignment, just to make sure that they don’t fall off of any cliffs.

Beth has finals starting tomorrow. She has been studying. She loves seeing all of her friends at school and is happy to be back.

A lot of the snow has melted. This last weekend we could see most of the streets. There are still piles of snow in parking lots. They are so big and cold that it takes a while to thaw them.

Here are some pictures: Sorry, all I have left is art museum pictures. Now that the kids are back in school I can concentrate on pictures.thinking man statue 1634 c15

1/13/14 warmer weather, darning sox, a house for the cats, Day 13/365…

It has been a lot warmer. It was above freezing and rainy over the weekend. The kids fort is starting to melt. When it was snowy we had made a path to out gas meter. Now it is melting down to the grass. 111fort2 111fort1 111water meter

We need to darn some of Beth’s sox. I don’t know if we need the darning ball…I am not sure if that is the name of it…or if we can darn them without it. I haven’t tried to darn soxs since junior high and I wasn’t successfull. The mending has to be flat so that it doesn’t feel strange to walk on the repair. Beth loves her sox, they are fun designs and she doesn’t like to get rid of them so we need to try to repair them.

Maggie has built the cats a house. It started out as one room, but the larger cat couldn’t turn around in it, so she added a side room. It also has a sun roof. I am not sure why she added the second side room with the empty peanut butter jar on it. It may be because she can take the peanut butter jar off…it isn’t taped on…and she can play with the cats through it. 1123 1125

1/10/14 spring fever, church meeting and camping, Day 10/365…

written Friday: It seemed like everyone had Spring Fever today. The weather was above 0 deg, all of the kids were in school…mine had a 2 hour delay, but they were in school…and there are no storms on the 7 day forecast.

At some houses sox disappear. At our house the left handed gloves disappear. We now have a lot of right handed gloves. I wear a baggie one on my left hand.

written Saturday: We had a meeting at church on Friday evening. The church is adding another location. It is in a town near us. We had four physical locations prior to this new one. I have met a few people at our church that are from this town. I bet that they are thrilled that this will make a shorter drive for them. It is a great opportunity to ask people in that town to come to church. I am not sure when it will open.

The kids and I had a fun day Saturday. We are trying to find a new place to go camping. We drove over to the new camp ground. It is not as close to our house as the one that we camped at last summer, so it was a fun car trip. We talked some, listened to some music, looked out of the window and spent a lot of time looking at the map. We stopped twice for directions before we finally found it. The drive home was a lot quicker. We can go camping there in the spring, we are not ready yet for year round camping. I didn’t take any pictures. We left the house late and wanted to find it and get back home before it got dark. I don’t like being out in unfamiliar territory in the country after dark. It takes some time to take pictures, especially in a new areas. When we see something to get a picture of, we need to turn around and go back to it, and sometimes get out of the car to be close enough. I take most of my pictures with my phone. We do have a camera, but it is so much easier not to carry a second item. There were a lot of things to get pictures of, but we would have gotten home after dark. When we go back, we can get a lot of pictures.
