1/21/14 gardening, Day 21/365…

We will have another garden this summer. We need to look at the seed packages and see when we need to start the seeds. Last year we saved two kinds of tomato seeds. We will try them to see if they sprout. This is our first try saving seeds. We have a small yard with a swing set in it so we have a small garden. We used to have three chickens so they had a large corner of the yard. Our yard is really too small for chickens so we gave them to a friend. They were named Millie, Hattie and Nettie. The kids called them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We miss them. We still have the chicken coop just in case we can get some chickens later.

We don’t really have enough time to garden so to cut down on the work we have eliminated hoeing. When we plant the garden we put layers of newspaper around the plants, about ten layers thick. Then we put compost over the paper, completely covering the paper, the weeds can’t grow through the paper and the paper falls apart throughout the growing season and is almost all gone at the fall cleanup. If a weed does grow we add more newspaper and compost. The paper and compost also help to keep the moisture in the ground around the plants. We connect the hose to the sprayer and turn it on and off in the basement.  I haven’t figured out how to harvest without going outside.

12/1/13 new year, saving seeds, Day 335/ 365…

How is it December already? Where did the year go? I need to update the new calendar with all of the birthdays and school days off, decide on my New Years Resolutions,  and plan the garden for next year.

We saved some seeds from our garden this year. This is our first try at seed saving. I read one article and said ”lets do this”. We saved tomato seeds. We took the seeds from the tomato and cleaned them off. We let them dry on paper towels, then we scraped them off of the towels and put them in little plastic containers with lids. I put on next years calendar where the containers are so that we can find them. We will get some store bought plants too, Just in case these don’t sprout. This is a picture of the seeds drying on the paper towel.seeds

10/15/13 saving tomato seeds, walnuts, Day 288/ 365…

We are going to try saving some seeds from our tomato plants this year. The plants are heirloom so the plants that sprout next year should be the same as the parent plant that we got the seeds from. This will be our first time saving seeds.
A few years ago we collected walnuts from a few trees in the area. When they fall off of the tree they have an inedible coating that is about one fourth to one half inch thick . We got directions on YouTube on how to get the covering and the shells off to get to the meat of the walnut. We started with about 30 plastic grocery bags of walnuts. There are so many walnuts in our area that is seemed like such a shame to have them go to waste. We ended up with about two inches of walnut meat in a gallon sized Ziploc bag. I don’t think that we will ever do that again, but I am saving some mesh bags to dry the walnuts in case we change our minds. If you do try this, I would suggest wearing two pairs of rubber gloves. We had a good time taking the outside covering off of the walnuts and later taking the hammer to the shells to get the walnut meat released. Now we understand why walnuts are so expensive.
