11/19/16 getting school books for Maggie…

When Maggie started college this semester, we had some of trouble getting her books. We bought one of Maggie’s books online. That sentence sounds so simple. I guess that if everything we did didn’t come with a story, I wouldn’t have anything to write about. Maggie needed a science book. The teacher told them that they could get it online. On all of the other books Maggie wanted an actual book, but on this one she said that an online one was OK. When she went online I asked Maggie if she was sure that this was the correct book. Remember that now that she is in college, I am not getting any information from the high school teachers. She said that she was not sure. Maggie does have a lot of science due this week and needed the book. Maggie decided to go to class on Tuesday and ask the teacher which book she needed. I said great, but please see if she has office hours that day so if you are still confused after you talk in class you can go to her office and she can pull up the book on her computer and you will know which one we should buy when you get home.
Maggie comes home and she looks up the book. I asked her if it was the correct book…expecting her to say, yes the teacher confirmed it…but she said…maybe, I should email the teacher. She sent a screen print of the book that she thought was correct to the teacher and started doing math. We had dinner and Maggie did more math. Maggie has homework due this week and has no book and doesn’t know which one to buy and it is getting late. Maybe the teacher didn’t have office hours today so that they couldn’t look up the book. It is so frustrating when they are older and you want to help them, but can only offer suggestions.

1/2/14 Thank-you’s, dog show, Historical Society Anniversary, Day 2/ 365…

Yesterday I found a blog that explained how to write a good thank-you note. My kids and I do write thank-yous, but they are not very good. The blog is at http://www.peckedtodeathbychickens.com/how-to-write-a-3-minute-thank-you-note-that-people-will-want-to-thank-you-for/ I hope that this will help us.

Last Tuesday we went to Maggie’s last two cultural events for this school year. One was a dog show at a local pet store. They had a dog that danced with her owner. It was cute. The owner said that the dog was trained to follow her hand to know which way to move. It was very interesting. She said we could Google “dog free style dancing” to see more examples. We took Beth and her boyfriend to this event. It was relatively close to our house. When the show was over we stayed at the pet store for a while. dog show

The second event was a local Historical Society’s 50th anniversary. The dog show was inside. I had pictured the anniversary party as an inside event. It wasn’t. It lasted an hour and had songs of the season, The Vice Mayor spoke, the town Crier was there, there were historical figures and the towns large bell was rung 50 times. They also shot off a cannon a few times. It was good to see the town keeping its past alive. anniversary celebration 2

Maggie had gotten the directions from Mapquest.com for the Anniversary party. The kids are older and do a lot of the map reading and direction giving when we go places. This does get a little tricky. With the kids giving the directions we need to leave early for every event so that if we get lost we can still be there on time. My kids like to give me the next line of the directions and put the directions away. If we need directions fast they need to get the directions out and unfold them, find their place and ask what my question was. By that time we have missed the turn. We are getting better at this and make most events on time. We only got lost once on the way to the anniversary party. It was dark when we went. We did remember to take the flashlight so that we could read the directions. Years ago we had a flashlight that we kept in the glove compartment of the car. When it needed new batteries we took it in and it never made its way back to the car. We do need a flashlight in the car.

At the Anniversary party they had the Lyrics to Auld Lang Syne. Here is a picture of them. I hope that you can read them. Song

Saturday 11/2/13 matching clothes, cooking , lunches and Day 306/ 365…

I have been trying to do every job every day. It is impossible! By the time that dinner is done and my clothes are matched for the next day, there is no time to help my kids with their flash cards for school. My kids are older, but they do need help with school work sometimes. I have found a hanging rack (I know that that is not the correct name for it) that clothes can be put into separate compartments that are stacked on one another and it is hung in the closet. I am going to put next weeks outfits into it. That will free up some time. I need to get back into once a month cooking. Years ago I did this and it was great. I think that we got out of it because, for it to work, we needed to go to the grocery store with the list, a calculator and the money. We kept leaving the list at home, to add more things to it, and just got back into the habit of cooking every day. We also need to get back into making lunched on Saturdays and freezing them.

10/29/13 William’s birthday!!! our kitty, Day 302/ 365…

Today is Williams birthday!!! He doesn’t get too excited about the birthdays themselves, but he likes the cake, ice cream and presents! We try to celebrate birthdays on the weekend, so that the kids don’t have to do homework after the party. This really doesn’t apply to William now that he isn’t in school. But, is has become a tradition and it is easier on all of us to get together when we are not rushed.

The little kitty got out again. The first time she was only outside, we believe, for a few minutes. Not long enough to get cold. The second time she was outside for a few minutes also. She used to look at us with playful eyes. Now she looks like she is planning. She has her claws, and might be OK outside, but we would miss her.

Thursday 9/26/13 senior year, day 269/365…

Maggie is now a senior in high school. We went to parent conferences tonight. Conferences always worry me. Overall my kids do OK, but week to week or even month to month as the homework and projects come and go, the grades are all over the place. This conference also included all of the things that are needed for her to graduate. It is not a long list, but I am concerned that if we miss something that only occurs once in the year, she may not be able to graduate. She took her ACT test last year, but she needs to take it again this year. She can take the SAT, but it is optional. She needs to schedule her classes next month for the next semester. She must get all of the ones that she needs to have enough credits of English, math…We need to find some baby pictures of Maggie. They have a slide show at graduation of the graduates and have current pictures and baby pictures. Her volunteer hours and cultural events for this semester are due December 9th. We added all of these things to the calendar. We need to look for baby pictures for Beth too. We will need them for next year.

Here is a picture of a fire hose. I know that my pictures don’t have anything to do with the post. Maybe someday they will, but for now they are just fun pictures. fire hose

Tuesday 9/17/14 guitar, science experiments, yard work and gum machines, day 260/365…

I never should have said in a recent past post that life has settled into a routine with the kids in school and I hope to have things to write about. After posting that I immediately got writers block.

The kids are in school. It is going well so far…Maggie had her first test in guitar class and passed. She can do the scales. Outstanding!!! Beth is doing experiments in science class. They were given eggs and some other items and needed to make a case around the egg so that when they dropped it from about four feet it wouldn’t break. They did an experiment today about the moisture content of popcorn. I am not sure how they did the measuring of the moisture, but I do know that they measured the cooking oil and popped the popcorn. Beth talked a lot about the popcorn experiment. She thought that it was cool.

We are in the lull before the storm. Summer is over and the homework has started, but there isn’t a lot of homework yet. We are holding our breath waiting for the calendar to fill up.

We started the fall yard work. We cut back the front hedges, and trimmed the flowers and the bushes in the back yard. Our yard isn’t big, but it always takes longer that we thought it would. It is best when William cuts the front hedges. When I cut them, they always look like eye brows.

Here is a gum machine that my kids like.

I need help. Does anyone know how to add “followers” to WordPress? I can’t find where to get the code. If anyone knows, please leave me a comment. I will really appreciate it.
