1/2/14 Thank-you’s, dog show, Historical Society Anniversary, Day 2/ 365…

Yesterday I found a blog that explained how to write a good thank-you note. My kids and I do write thank-yous, but they are not very good. The blog is at http://www.peckedtodeathbychickens.com/how-to-write-a-3-minute-thank-you-note-that-people-will-want-to-thank-you-for/ I hope that this will help us.

Last Tuesday we went to Maggie’s last two cultural events for this school year. One was a dog show at a local pet store. They had a dog that danced with her owner. It was cute. The owner said that the dog was trained to follow her hand to know which way to move. It was very interesting. She said we could Google “dog free style dancing” to see more examples. We took Beth and her boyfriend to this event. It was relatively close to our house. When the show was over we stayed at the pet store for a while. dog show

The second event was a local Historical Society’s 50th anniversary. The dog show was inside. I had pictured the anniversary party as an inside event. It wasn’t. It lasted an hour and had songs of the season, The Vice Mayor spoke, the town Crier was there, there were historical figures and the towns large bell was rung 50 times. They also shot off a cannon a few times. It was good to see the town keeping its past alive. anniversary celebration 2

Maggie had gotten the directions from Mapquest.com for the Anniversary party. The kids are older and do a lot of the map reading and direction giving when we go places. This does get a little tricky. With the kids giving the directions we need to leave early for every event so that if we get lost we can still be there on time. My kids like to give me the next line of the directions and put the directions away. If we need directions fast they need to get the directions out and unfold them, find their place and ask what my question was. By that time we have missed the turn. We are getting better at this and make most events on time. We only got lost once on the way to the anniversary party. It was dark when we went. We did remember to take the flashlight so that we could read the directions. Years ago we had a flashlight that we kept in the glove compartment of the car. When it needed new batteries we took it in and it never made its way back to the car. We do need a flashlight in the car.

At the Anniversary party they had the Lyrics to Auld Lang Syne. Here is a picture of them. I hope that you can read them. Song

11/30/13 Halloween decorations, car, Black Friday, Christmas decorations, Day 334/ 365…

We took down our Halloween decorations the day before Thanksgiving. We are usually more organized than that. The front porch looks so bare. Halloween decorations

Our car now has 350,000 miles.  Outstanding. miles

We went out on Black Friday. We usually aim to leave the house at five or six in the morning. Then we leave at seven. We usually go to the mall or to the book store. There are not many people there. They must all be at the electronics stores. This is our third year to do this, I think. The kids are older and they can help pick out presents.

We were going to put up our Christmas tree this weekend. Christmas now seems so close. But we decided not to. Having two big holidays in one weekend was too much…and we also just took down the Halloween decorations.

11/28/13 Thanksgiving, peeling potatoes, Halloween decorations, Day 332/ 365…

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

We had a good Thanksgiving. Mom came over. We all finished making the meal together. It was fun, all five of us in the kitchen. The kids are old enough that they can make a lot of the meal with out instructions. We wrote what we are thankful for on the cloth before we ate. thankful

One of our traditions is that the night before Thanksgiving the kids and I peel the potatoes. We started doing this when they were really young, they were probably in early grade school. At that time they couldn’t peel a whole potato. The first year was a huge learning experience. They were able to see one piece of the meal and how it was made.  The second year they could peel the potatoes better. It is a time for all of us to sit down together and create memories. The first year we peeled potatoes for a long time. It seemed like forever. The kids kept saying ”this potato peeler doesn’t work” so I would give them a different peeler. They were little, so that one wouldn’t work either. After a while I said that they had helped me a lot and I would finish the job. They were too young to realize that they hadn’t peeled any potatoes. The second year it went better. Some of the kids peeled a potato or two. We spent a lot of time talking about how much they had grown up in the last year.  We didn’t need to switch any peelers that second year. We sat together for a while and peeled and talked. Then I finished the job. By the third year, the kids were pros. We did the whole bag together. It took a while, so we had time to talk about the last year and things happening today. Fast forward to a few years later. One year we set up everything and I went back to the kitchen to get an extra potato peeler. When I came back, the job was done. The kids were ready to clean up. We hadn’t gotten to talk. They didn’t know that part of the purpose was time together. They were ready to put everything away. The next year, I made sure that everything was in the room before we started. This year we completely forgot to peel the potatoes the night before. We should peel a batch of potatoes for Christmas.

11/27/13 have a great Thanksgiving, Day 331/ 365…

I’m sorry that I didn’t post this morning. I write in the evening and set the computer to post the next morning, but last night we had a lot going on and I didn’t get to the computer until eleven. It was too late to type in good sentences.

Happy early Thanksgiving. I have been thinking a lot about what I am thankful for. Tomorrow we will be writing on the cloth what we are thankful for. Since it is written and we use the same cloth each year, so people see it every year, we try  to think of new things.

The repair man came over today and looked at our boiler. It turns out that it wasn’t broken, it just needed an adjustment. I am really thankful for heat, and for my kids, who are kind heart-ed and fun, funny and thoughtful. There are so many things that could be listed this year: our church, which has the nicest people, my family and friends…the list could go on and on. I don’t write about our drama, this is a happy blog, but some years we have a lot of drama. Right now everything is calm. So the possibilities to write about what I am thankful for are abundant. I am happy to be writing each day. When I don’t write the words swirl around in my head and I try to remember all of the stories so that they can be written down later. Remembering takes a lot of my thinking time. It is great to have the creative time each day. In the end I think that being with my family and knowing that they are OK is what I am most thankful for.

I hope that everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Sunday 11/24/13 Halloween decorations, Thanksgiving, snow and Day 328/ 365…

We need to take the Halloween decorations that are outside down. We don’t usually leave them up this long. They will be down before Thanksgiving, so I am not worried.

I checked the thankful cloth that we write on at Thanksgiving. The kids do write what the cats are thankful for. Well…they are part of the family too.

It snowed today. It was a good dry snow with big flakes. It only lasted about a half hour an then all of the accumulation blew away. Maybe winter is here. We can never tell in our town. We don’t have four separate seasons. In one week it could be 70 degrees and sunny, then rainy and then 30 degrees. Each day can be its own season. We keep an extra blanket in the car and dress in layers.

Monday 11/11/13 snow, report cards, Day 315/ 365..

It snowed today. We took out the remains of the garden in the back yard. The plants were pulled up and the stakes put into the garage. With the backyard mowed it looks so different.

Beth got her report card. We were really worried. She is a junior and is really working hard on her classes. She had a great report card…no F’s, no D’s and no U’s! We were really excited!!!

We need to take down our Halloween decorations. Maybe this weekend. We put up our Christmas decorations after Thanksgiving is over.

Tuesday 11/5/13 Halloween, Day 309/ 365…

This next week should be more ”normal”. Church weekends are over. It was great to go and it is great to get back.

Halloween is tonight. Maggie and Beth are going  with their friends. Yes they are older, but it is harmless fun. Maggie is going as the girlfriend of the guy on ”Bog Bang Theory”. Beth is going as her boyfriend. Beth tried to go as candy corn to her schools Halloween party. She shared the duct tape with a friend and there wasn’t enough for either of them. She put the tape over a t shirt and a pair of jeans, but it only covered her shirt and a few inches of her jeans. She ended up wearing her boyfriends hoodie and went as him.

When the kids were young we all went together. We took pillow cases to hold the candy. We made their costumes each year. I remember getting out the saran wrap, aluminum foil and the tape and saying ”what had you thought about being this year?” Then we would make each costume.

The kids each had a different idea of how fast we should go from house to house. One of the kids wanted to run from house to house. One wanted to walk with me and the third wanted to stay on each porch and look at all of the decorations.

Sunday 11/3/13 new backpack, Halloween decorations, Day 307/ 365…

Maggie wanted a second back pack from the same company that made the back pack that she carries her school books in. Maggie is fascinated with ordering things online. She found the back pack that she wanted and saved up the money for it. I have an E-Bay account so she bought it through my account. Maggie is thrilled. She can’t wait for it to arrive. The back pack should be here tomorrow or the next day.
We put up our Halloween decorations over the weekend. We are not great at putting up holiday decorations, but when we do put them up we try to get them up before the holiday. We have the witch that ran into the house, a skeleton and some pumpkins outside. The inside decorations were harder to place this year. When we had one cat, we could put things anywhere. She was a quiet cat and didn’t knock too many things off of tables. With two cats, and one being very playful the decisions of where to put things took longer.witch and skeletin

Saturday 11/2/13 matching clothes, cooking , lunches and Day 306/ 365…

I have been trying to do every job every day. It is impossible! By the time that dinner is done and my clothes are matched for the next day, there is no time to help my kids with their flash cards for school. My kids are older, but they do need help with school work sometimes. I have found a hanging rack (I know that that is not the correct name for it) that clothes can be put into separate compartments that are stacked on one another and it is hung in the closet. I am going to put next weeks outfits into it. That will free up some time. I need to get back into once a month cooking. Years ago I did this and it was great. I think that we got out of it because, for it to work, we needed to go to the grocery store with the list, a calculator and the money. We kept leaving the list at home, to add more things to it, and just got back into the habit of cooking every day. We also need to get back into making lunched on Saturdays and freezing them.

Wednesday 10/23/13 Emmaus Walk, cats and Halloween, Day 296/ 365…

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted in a while. I was on an Emmaus Walk last weekend. The week before it had been planned out very well so that all of the packing for all of us could be done, we would have time to eat dinner together and do all of our family activities. It didn’t work out. Everything went wrong. And the car broke down. Car engines really do smoke. Not to worry…the car got fixed and we all got packed. The kids went to grandmas for the weekend. The Emmaus Walk went well. I saw a lot of old friends and made a lot of new ones.

We are now settling back into our daily lives. One of our cats got out this morning. We have inside cats, but they do have claws. She was out all day. We found her outside under the deck when we got home. When we were getting her the second cat got out. This is the first time that these cats have been outside. Our last cat hated being outside, when the door opened he ran to the middle of the room. It was nice to know that he was always safe. These two cats are curious and is is difficult in the morning when we turn off the lights to leave so the house is dark and it is dark outside, we can’t tell if a cat has gone outside. Both of the cats are back in the house. It was a chilly day for the cat to be outside.

Beth has decided to be candy corn for Halloween. We found the white and orange duct tape at the first store, but it took about three more stops to find the yellow duct tape. It will be interesting to see how this costume turns out. She would have been warmer if she had chosen to go as Captain Fluffy, but it is her choice.
