1/30/14 art class and shoveling, Day 30/365…

Maggie is taking an art class. Last weekend her assignment was to draw something. She set up a few items in the living room and began to draw. She started with a tea pot and a cup, but decided that they would be too difficult to draw. She changed to a can of food and a bowl. The cats climbed all over the items that she was drawing and all over her paper. They need to be the center of all of the activities. Finally we put the cats in a bedroom. When we went to check on the cats, they escaped. We only have two cats, but they can be in every room all at one time. 1293 1302

Last weekend we went outside to shovel the snow. We also shoveled for one elderly neighbor. We used to have three elderly neighbors to shovel for, but unfortunately two of them passed away. Our drives aren’t that long so shoveling for a few neighbors doesn’t take that much time. What do you do on the weekends?

1/29/14 moving the movies and planting seeds, Day 29/365…

We have too many movies for our movie shelf. We moved some items off of another shelf to make room for the movies. When the movies were moved we now have a lot of the movies that were in the back out in front. It is like getting a lot of new movies. I may go to the movie shelf and rearrange it more often so that we have fresh choices. 1294

We need to look at our seeds and see when they need to be started. We have had a small garden for the past few years. We like to start the seeds inside in the winter…it is so much cheaper…but sometimes we have too much going on and we buy our plants at Lowes. We have a table set up to start our seeds on. 1291

One year we planted herbs. Some of them are high maintenance. Basil needs to have all of its leaves washed off the night before they are picked. This was too much work for us. We always have tomatoes. Two years ago we had tomatoes in one spot. In November of that year we planted garlic there. The next summer the tomatoes grew back, on top of the garlic. It was a busy year for us and we didn’t get the tomatoes moved. When it was time to harvest the garlic, we couldn’t see it. This year if the tomatoes come up in that area again, we are going to move them. Is it good to have the garlic grow for two years before we harvest it?

1/28/14 taking pictures and wearing gloves, Day 28/365…

I have been taking fewer pictures lately because it has been so cold out and because I only go to the same places every day. It is boring taking pictures of the same tree and the same piles of snow every day. Last weekend we went around town to do some errands. The day happened to be warmer, about twenty degrees, so I was able to take more pictures.

Maggie has to go to different buildings for each of her classes. The other day on the way home she told me that she had decided to try wearing her gloves. It has been about four degrees above zero with a wind chill added to that. I asked her how it went. She said that she was warmer and was going to wear the gloves.

When the kids were young I had them wear gloves and hats and zip their jackets in the winter. Now that they are older they can make some of their own decisions. They do have jackets, hats and gloves…I gave up on scarves years ago…but they get to choose if they will wear them. My kids are 25, 18 and 17. If it is cold enough that I would wear these items, I make sure that the kids take them when they go out, but they get to choose if they will wear them. If the kids do get sick then I get to make the choices of how they will dress until they are healthy again. It was tough to let go, but it has worked out well. The kids are still healthy and I don’t need to watch them so closely. When did you start to let your kids make some of their own choices? How did it work out?

1/27/14 giving to the Goodwill, Day 27/365…

Maggie reorganized her room and brought down some things for Goodwill. When the kids were young we would take a load to Goodwill at the end of summer. It was a good time for us to sort things out. The kids have their birthdays in September, October and November, and then there is Christmas with another avalanche of toys coming into the house. At the end of summer we aren’t into school work yet, and the kids know that they have more toys coming to replace the ones that they have given away. We have to sort out the toys or we would get buried. When the kids were young, the girls would keep ten to fifteen dolls and ten to fifteen baby blankets, etc. William would keep about as much of his army men etc. They never were without toys, but a good sort out is sometimes necessary. The first year of giving was the hardest. The kids understood that they would be getting more toys soon and that they still had a lot, but it was still hard to part with anything. About two weeks after giving the toys to Goodwill the first time Beth started sobbing. She had given away a doll that was her favorite. She said that she had taken a long time to decide which dolls to give away…remember that she did keep about fifteen dolls…but she regretted not having this one. She was so sad with her tear stained face and sad eyes. I went to the trunk of my car where the Goodwill load was and got her doll. She was so happy. I hadn’t delivered the load because I knew that this would be tough and I wanted to have the toys in case anyone melted down. I kept the toys in the trunck for about another month. Then I asked the kids if it was OK to deliver them now. We had the birthdays and Christmas and the kids got more toys. The next year it was easier. They knew what was happening. I want the kids to have toys, but we can’t have so many that we can’t walk through the house. Now they do their own sorts when they rearrange their rooms. I do go through their items. Sometimes they throw away a yearbook or something else that is precious to them by mistake. I still keep the items in the trunk for a week or two…just in case. What yearly events do you or your family do to keep things running smoothly?

1/26/14 book review, Day 26/365…

Partial book review. I have been reading “Mayflower” by Nathaniel Philbrick. I like history and it was on the withdrawn table at the library so it was about a dollar. I won’t need to remember to return it. Sometimes it takes me a long time to read a book. It is good book about the people that came over on the Mayflower. It starts back in Europe with the families that decided to leave for America and it gives a lot of the trials that the families went through before even leaving on their voyage. This book really puts faces and heartfelt decisions into the names of history, and gives the good and the bad of the characters. The pilgrims came over to have religious freedom and to convert the Indians and ended up taking over America from the Indians. All of the wars became too much for me. I am halfway trough the book and the wars are going on all over New England. Since I am not looking forward to the book, not wanting to hear about the wars any more I am changing books. I have just started “A Confident Heart” by Renee Swope…she is with Proverbs 31 Ministry. After reading four pages it looks like a better book for me. The cover says that it is about “How to stop doubting yourself and live in the security of God’s promises”. I may go back to the Mayflower book, or read both at the same time.  What book are you reading? Would you recommend it to others?12556 12558

1/25/14 catching up and having friends over, Day 25/365…

Last night I made a list of all of the things that we need to get done…from the kids doing homework, to people that I need to e-mail to making lunches for next week. Last week we were just holding on. With Maggie’s deadline for projects at school and all of the cold weather we didn’t get any extra things done. I need to catch up before I get buried. Maggie did get her projects in on Friday.

Maggie and Beth had a friend stay the night last night. They watched movies and made brownies. Now that the kids are older I have them make brownies whenever they have a friend over. It gives them something to do…and eat. They like to talk about the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse. The topic of how they will defend themselves and where they will live is very fascinating to them. They must all watch the same shows, because they are always in agreement on how to stay alive. It’s also nice for them to have a friend over because the kids help with the housework without whimpering.

When my kids were little we had a lot of kids living on this street. We took turns having the kids over so the kids had a sleep over almost every weekend. It was so easy since all of the kids lived right here. They would come over after dinner and in the morning we just needed to open the door and the kids could walk across the street to their own house. Having all of the kids around really brought us together as a neighborhood.

1/23/14 back to school, weather changes and senior events, Day 23/365…

Beth is so glad to be back at school. She loves seeing all of her friends. The kids were on break for Christmas which was at least two weeks long. Then they were off for the bad weather. Then they had finals week where they only had school for half days that week. Then they were off for Martin Luther King Jr. day on Monday, the teachers had an in-service day on Tuesday and the kids had a two hour delay on Wednesday. She is glad that there aren’t any more vacations planned soon. It is tough to be a very social person with all of this vacation.

It was about two degrees today. It has been cold for a while. When I was young it stayed cold and snowy all winter. Lately it has been back and forth between cold and warm. When the temperatures changes a lot between cold and warm we end up with a lot of ice on the roads. This year we have had a lot of cold weather. The steady cold weather does mean that we don’t have the ice on the roads.

Maggie applied for her two scholarships today. They are due at school by tomorrow. She needed her grade point average to finish applying for them.

1/22/14 senior year wrap-up, Day 22/365…

Maggie is a senior. The crunch is on. She has a lot of homework to do, but she also has a lot “senior” work to do to. She needs letters of recommendation from her teachers. The teachers want a list of her clubs / accomplishments and volunteer work so that they can write correct letters. Maggie can use these letters when she signs up for scholarships. She also needs to apply for two scholarships by this Friday. The students are required to do this so that they have had practice while an adviser is there to help. She is signed up to take the ACT already and she has finished her volunteer hours and cultural events and turned them into her adviser. The senior group picture is scheduled for this Friday. She talked to the counselor today to make sure that she hasn’t missed anything.

Maggie is very calm about all of the work that needs to be done. I am so worried that we will miss something. What are your projects that you are doing with your kids this year?

1/21/14 broken boilers and mission trips, Day 21/365…

Our boiler broke yesterday. When we got up it was chilly in the house, not cold, just chilly. The pilot light had gone out. We have lit it before, so we tried again. Sometimes in the summer the wind gets in through an open window and blows out the pilot light. But, this is winter and the windows are closed. It didn’t light. We found the directions and tried again. It didn’t light. We called the maintenance man. He said that a part had broken and he replaced it. While he was here he showed us the correct way to relight the pilot. I asked if there was any preventative maintenance that we should be doing and he said no. We already bleed the pipes in the house once a year. Have you had a quiet week? 12112

We went to a mission trip meeting tonight. Maggie and Beth are going on a mission trip this summer. They went on a mission trip two years ago with the church to New Orleans for a week and they did a camp in the morning and went to neighborhoods in the afternoon. The girls are really looking forward to going back and helping in the camp with the kids again. It is a great chance for them to be the hands and feet of Christ.

The next mission trip meeting is next Tuesday. People can still sign up for the mission trips. There are also two other trips scheduled for that week.

1/21/14 gardening, Day 21/365…

We will have another garden this summer. We need to look at the seed packages and see when we need to start the seeds. Last year we saved two kinds of tomato seeds. We will try them to see if they sprout. This is our first try saving seeds. We have a small yard with a swing set in it so we have a small garden. We used to have three chickens so they had a large corner of the yard. Our yard is really too small for chickens so we gave them to a friend. They were named Millie, Hattie and Nettie. The kids called them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We miss them. We still have the chicken coop just in case we can get some chickens later.

We don’t really have enough time to garden so to cut down on the work we have eliminated hoeing. When we plant the garden we put layers of newspaper around the plants, about ten layers thick. Then we put compost over the paper, completely covering the paper, the weeds can’t grow through the paper and the paper falls apart throughout the growing season and is almost all gone at the fall cleanup. If a weed does grow we add more newspaper and compost. The paper and compost also help to keep the moisture in the ground around the plants. We connect the hose to the sprayer and turn it on and off in the basement.  I haven’t figured out how to harvest without going outside.
