12/31/13 New Years Day, power cords, guitar class and rescuing the cat, Day 365/ 365…

Happy New Year!!! Each new year I like to take a look at the past year and see how it went. Last Sunday our Pastor suggested that we use the Bible verse from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (New Living Translation). He said to look at each season and see how it has affected your life in the past year. For example, in a time to be born, what have you started or begun to set up, or in a time to die, what have you finished or quit doing.

“1 For everything there is a season,

a time for every activity under heaven.

2 A time to be born and a time to die.

A time to plant and a time to harvest.

3 A time to kill and a time to heal.

A time to tear down and a time to build up.

4 A time to cry and a time to laugh.

A time to grieve and a time to dance.

5 A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.

A time to embrace and a time to turn away.

6 A time to search and a time to quit searching.

A time to keep and a time to throw away.

7 A time to tear and a time to mend.

A time to be quiet and a time to speak.

8 A time to love and a time to hate.

A time for war and a time for peace.” (Footnote 1)

I like to be everywhere. This last year I let go of some projects that weren’t helping our family. It is tough for me to end things. Sometimes I think that if we stay with them for a little longer they will work out. I don’t want to give up too early because a lot of things dopolka all stars two squirls
take some work. Letting go of these projects has given me more time for the helpful things that I am doing.

At the beginning of December I lost the power cord for my Nook. It was fully charged so I decided to keep using it and post the entries when the power cord was found. We have found the cord. I am now keeping the cord in a desk drawer.

Monday 12.2.13 I have lost the charging cord for my cell phone and the cord for my Nook. We saw the cords last week. Luckily the kids have a cord that will work on my phone. Charging cords at our house are like sox, they keep getting lost.
Maggie had her last day of guitar today. She was releived. She liked the other students and the teachers, but wasn’t thrilled with the guitar. Her other classes don’t end until the end of the year.

Monday 12.16.13 The smaller cat got caught in Maggie’s dresser yesterday. It is a built in dresser. When Maggie pulled out the bottom drawer the cat climbed in the dresser drawer and then back behind it. We tried to call the cat to get her out, sometimes she comes when we call her. She didn’t come out this time. We tried to reach in, over the back of the drawer and get her. We couldn’t get her. Then we got their cat food dish and shook it to see if she would come out to eat. She didn’t. Next we tried the cat nip. She tried to climb out but didn’t have anything to push off of with her back legs. We gently started to close the drawer some until she was able to use the back of the dresser as a base to push off of and she was able to get out. We were all very happy that she was safe. The cat wasn’t upset by the experience because she tried to climb back in later.

12/29/13 cultural events and New Years Resolutions, Day 363/ 365

Maggie needs two more cultural events for the year. We are hoping to get them done before she starts back into school in January. It is so much easier to get them done before school starts.

In the end of this story everyone is OK. I am still working on my New Years Resolutions. I do make them and sometimes accomplish them. One year I made my resolutions and lost the paper that they were on. They had been good resolutions that would bring me closer to God…like reading my Bible more…and there were some household resolutions too,  I redid the list…then it got lost again. It is better for me to have a path to follow, then I stay on task. I wrote the list a third time… … … and lost it a third time. After a while I got busy with life and forgot about rewriting it again. One day William was riding his bike and he got hit by a pick up truck. His leg was broken. He was taken to the hospital. It was broken in one place. They tried to put a cast on it but it was broken at an angle and would not stay together in the cast. They had surgery and put pins and plates into the leg, When he left the hospital he had an ace bandage on it. William went back to school soon, but ended up using a wheel chair to get from class to class for a while. He went to therapy for a long time. We scheduled therapy for after school. We would pick up all of the kids and go over, then go home and do homework. It was an exhausting time. William eventually did not need therapy and was able to walk without crutches. He is OK now and has stopped limping. He didn’t ride his bike for years. God new that all of our time that year would need to be concentrated on William.

12/28/13 Christmas traditions, Day 362/ 365…

I have a friend who has six kids. At first when they had two or three kids, they opened all of their presents on Christmas morning. When they had a few more kids, it just didn’t work any more. They had presents from Santa, the parents, the presents that the kids were giving each other and some of the teachers sent home a present to all of the kids in their classes. It became too much. They decided to change and have the twelve days of Christmas. They start twelve days before Christmas. Each night has a theme. One night is presents from parents. The next day may be presents from teachers. They have a few of the kids give their presents to everyone one day and others give theirs the next. They have been doing this for years and it really works for them. Before there was so much unwrapping that no one could see what had been opened. Every family is different.

12/26/13 Christmas…

Merry Christmas!

We had a fun Christmas. The day before Christmas we volunteered at church. We are still relatively new there so volunteering has been a good way to meet people. Maggie volunteered in the child care area and William, Beth, Beth’s boyfriend and I made hot chocolate.

On Christmas morning we finish the nativity set. When the kids were young we started Joseph and Mary in a different room and had them move each night closer to the nativity set…unless we forgot about them for a night and moved them an extra amount the next night…or the year that we got busy with homework and they made the whole trip Christmas morning. Then we bring in baby Jesus. We read a little from the Bible, the part about the census and returning to Bethlehem and the angles appearing to the shepherds. Then we open presents. Mom comes over on Christmas. We do have a large family, but mom is the only one in town.

I haven’t written in a while so if I repeat pictures or stories, I am sorry. I repeat myself a lot in real life too!!!

I can’t get the pictures to load. I will have pictures on another post.

12/16/13 Manor house Christmas. Day 350/ 365…

We went to the manor house this weekend to see the decorations. It is always very festive. Maggie went with me after we volunteered at her school. It is decorated by different people each year so the decorations are always different. 1 23

12/15/13 volunteering, snow and Day 349/ 365…

Maggie and I volunteered at her school yesterday. They are having a ”Picture with Santa” event today. I hope that the roads are clear so that people will come to it. The kids at this event can make ornaments and reindeer food and do some other crafts. It should be fun. We are going back to volunteer at the event after church. paper snow flakes snowflakes2snowmen pine cones wanted

We got a lot of snow yesterday. They had predicted 3 to 8 inches. We had that much in our drive. When we got home we had to shovel the drive before we could get into it. snow path snowy pine treesnowy pine tree2 snow swing

12/14/13 putting up the Christmas tree, Day 348/ 365…

I’m sorry that I haven’t written in a while. We have been busy with school. I also lost my cord for my Nook. I can write on it until it needs re-charged, but I can’t transfer anything to the computer. I would like to say that the cats took the cord, but I think that it is too big for them to carry.

We put up our Christmas tree last night. We keep all of the Christmas things in the basement. We found the Christmas tree, which was at the bottom of the pile since we have rearranged the basement  a few times in the last year. After digging it out, we started looking for the base. We all looked and got a flashlight. Finally one of the kids said that she thought that we had put it in the Christmas tree box so that we could find it. It was there. We brought up the ornaments, which are now all in one big plastic tote, and the wreath for outside. When we got them open we didn’t have any lights. They were in the basement in a box which we had labeled “Christmas lights”. I don’t usually label boxes as well as I should so it was nice that this one had been labeled. We separated the tree branches by size and started putting up the tree. We have a long rope that we keep with the tree and we tied the center pole of the tree to the close furniture, to help the tree stay up. Then we put up the tree. By now Maggie had decided that she was too warm and had gone to put shorts on and Beth decided that she was cold and was completely wrapped in a blanket. But everyone was there. We put up the lights with all of us standing around the tree handing the lights to the next person until the whole string is on the tree. We decided not to use the lights that have a music box on them…when they are plugged in the music starts playing. The tree actually looked really good with only lights on it. Christmas tree lights We started adding the ornaments. We were all watching the cats. Our older cat doesn’t play with the tree much, but we weren’t sure what the new cat would do. cat2 (2) cat1 We have a separate little ”parade” of ornaments that go off to the side. They are the Christmas things that won’t go on the tree.parade1 parade2 Maggie set this up and William, Beth and I put up ornaments. Then later Maggie helped with the tree. We have enough ornaments to put about three on each branch, the kids pointed out that maybe that is why the tree falls over is because we have too much weight on it. I think that it is because we need a new base. If we put less ornaments on the tree, how would we decide which ones to leave off. We could rotate them, having a three year plan, but I like seeing all of them. Christmas tree1 Christmas tree2 The new cat started playing with the lower ornaments and climbing in the tree. This morning she was on the back of a chair so that she could look at the higher ornaments.

The wreath is up outside, the tree is up and the manger scene is set up except for baby Jesus who hasn’t arrived yet. Manger scene We have some decorations that need to be put up around the house and we will be all done.

When we were finished we took a Christmas picture in front of the tree with the kids. Except that William said that he wouldn’t be in it this year. We also got the cats to be in it. Except for our little cat who ran out of the picture. Some years we have everyone and some years we don’t.

I thought that we could finish the evening by watching a Christmas movie. The kids said that they already had ”Sherlock Homes” in. They had been watching it another day and wanted to finish it first. So we finished ”Sherlock Homes”.

So this is us. Our tree doesn’t stay up, we are in shorts and wrapped in blankets, we don’t get everyone into the Christmas picture and we watch ”Sherlock Homes” as our Christmas movie. But we are together, we get along most of the time so from out house to yours, I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and you make a lot of fun memories of your own this next year!!!

12/5/13 decorating for Christmas, Day 339/ 365…

We are going to put up our Christmas tree tomorrow. We are starting to get into the spirit. We have started playing Christmas music while we decorate. We spend a lot of time putting up decorations in the house. Putting up the tree is it’s own event. Our tree doesn’t match the tree stand, so it wobbles. Some years we get it just right and it stays up straight. Three years ago we put up the tree and then tied it to all of the close furniture. If the rope is put in just the right spot, it is not seen, or we put a blanket over the rope. Three years ago we put up the tree and tied it up. It started to lean every day. We could always hear someone in the living room calling out ”tree” and we would all come running. We put it back up straight and re-tied the ropes. The next day it would lean again. Two years ago it stayed up. We carefully marked that stand (we have a few stands) so that we could use it the next year. It didn’t work. The next year it leaned a lot too. Last year was better.

There is now a company that makes stands with a sort of tube base. The stand is set down, the trunk of the tree goes into the tube and the tree stays up. I told the kids that we should get that stand so that our tree could stay up all year. They said ”no” it was our tradition to tie up the tree and have it lean all the time.

I used to think that  we were the only house that had a leaning tree. One day I was telling of our adventures the night before with the tree and someone else spoke up. He said that they always put their tree in a corner and leaned it toward the corner. His family also had a dog that pulled the tree down so they tied it up too. It sounds like a lot of memories were made around that tree.
