11/30/13 Halloween decorations, car, Black Friday, Christmas decorations, Day 334/ 365…

We took down our Halloween decorations the day before Thanksgiving. We are usually more organized than that. The front porch looks so bare. Halloween decorations

Our car now has 350,000 miles.  Outstanding. miles

We went out on Black Friday. We usually aim to leave the house at five or six in the morning. Then we leave at seven. We usually go to the mall or to the book store. There are not many people there. They must all be at the electronics stores. This is our third year to do this, I think. The kids are older and they can help pick out presents.

We were going to put up our Christmas tree this weekend. Christmas now seems so close. But we decided not to. Having two big holidays in one weekend was too much…and we also just took down the Halloween decorations.

11/28/13 Thanksgiving, peeling potatoes, Halloween decorations, Day 332/ 365…

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

We had a good Thanksgiving. Mom came over. We all finished making the meal together. It was fun, all five of us in the kitchen. The kids are old enough that they can make a lot of the meal with out instructions. We wrote what we are thankful for on the cloth before we ate. thankful

One of our traditions is that the night before Thanksgiving the kids and I peel the potatoes. We started doing this when they were really young, they were probably in early grade school. At that time they couldn’t peel a whole potato. The first year was a huge learning experience. They were able to see one piece of the meal and how it was made.  The second year they could peel the potatoes better. It is a time for all of us to sit down together and create memories. The first year we peeled potatoes for a long time. It seemed like forever. The kids kept saying ”this potato peeler doesn’t work” so I would give them a different peeler. They were little, so that one wouldn’t work either. After a while I said that they had helped me a lot and I would finish the job. They were too young to realize that they hadn’t peeled any potatoes. The second year it went better. Some of the kids peeled a potato or two. We spent a lot of time talking about how much they had grown up in the last year.  We didn’t need to switch any peelers that second year. We sat together for a while and peeled and talked. Then I finished the job. By the third year, the kids were pros. We did the whole bag together. It took a while, so we had time to talk about the last year and things happening today. Fast forward to a few years later. One year we set up everything and I went back to the kitchen to get an extra potato peeler. When I came back, the job was done. The kids were ready to clean up. We hadn’t gotten to talk. They didn’t know that part of the purpose was time together. They were ready to put everything away. The next year, I made sure that everything was in the room before we started. This year we completely forgot to peel the potatoes the night before. We should peel a batch of potatoes for Christmas.

11/27/13 have a great Thanksgiving, Day 331/ 365…

I’m sorry that I didn’t post this morning. I write in the evening and set the computer to post the next morning, but last night we had a lot going on and I didn’t get to the computer until eleven. It was too late to type in good sentences.

Happy early Thanksgiving. I have been thinking a lot about what I am thankful for. Tomorrow we will be writing on the cloth what we are thankful for. Since it is written and we use the same cloth each year, so people see it every year, we try  to think of new things.

The repair man came over today and looked at our boiler. It turns out that it wasn’t broken, it just needed an adjustment. I am really thankful for heat, and for my kids, who are kind heart-ed and fun, funny and thoughtful. There are so many things that could be listed this year: our church, which has the nicest people, my family and friends…the list could go on and on. I don’t write about our drama, this is a happy blog, but some years we have a lot of drama. Right now everything is calm. So the possibilities to write about what I am thankful for are abundant. I am happy to be writing each day. When I don’t write the words swirl around in my head and I try to remember all of the stories so that they can be written down later. Remembering takes a lot of my thinking time. It is great to have the creative time each day. In the end I think that being with my family and knowing that they are OK is what I am most thankful for.

I hope that everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Tuesday 11/26/13 youth group, crawl space, e-mail contacts, Day 330/ 365…

The girls are at youth group tonight. Beth’s boyfriend goes with them.

It is cold out. We wrapped the pipes in the crawl space last year with heat tape. When the temperature drops below a certain point the tape heats up keeping the pipes from freezing and a light goes on. When we are in the basement it is fun to watch the lights go on and off.

There is a big storm coming this way. It started in California and is heading east.

I printed out a list of contacts from my e-mail the other day. If my whole computer dies, I will have the names and e-mail addresses. The kids also keep a list of the names and phone numbers that are in their phones.

Monday 11/25/13 missing church…

We didn’t make it to church yesterday. We were going to go to the 12:30 service. When we went to the car the tire was going flat. By the time that we got the nail taken out of it, the service was over. We can watch the talk on the internet. They post previous talks, which is really nice. I like being there in person, but having the option of seeing it later or seeing the service live on the internet is helpful. A few weeks ago I was sick, so the kids and I watched the service at home.  We need to get to the church next week.

Maggie rearranged her room this weekend.

I can’t get the pictures to open on my computer today. Sorry, hopefully they will open tomorrow.

Sunday 11/24/13 Halloween decorations, Thanksgiving, snow and Day 328/ 365…

We need to take the Halloween decorations that are outside down. We don’t usually leave them up this long. They will be down before Thanksgiving, so I am not worried.

I checked the thankful cloth that we write on at Thanksgiving. The kids do write what the cats are thankful for. Well…they are part of the family too.

It snowed today. It was a good dry snow with big flakes. It only lasted about a half hour an then all of the accumulation blew away. Maybe winter is here. We can never tell in our town. We don’t have four separate seasons. In one week it could be 70 degrees and sunny, then rainy and then 30 degrees. Each day can be its own season. We keep an extra blanket in the car and dress in layers.

Saturday 11/23/13 storage containers and sock dolls, Day 327/ 365…

Last night was a quiet evening. Maggie bought a storage container. She really likes storage containers. She is re-arranging her room and needed more storage. A few years ago she and Beth made some sock dolls. The cat likes to be in the picture. sock dolls and cat sock dolls

Friday 11/22/13 writing my blog, Day 326/ 365…

One of the comments that was posted was when do I write. How do I fit this in with kids. The comment was from Tasha. Her blog is at http://tasha-mae.blogspot.com/ if you want to visit her. When the kids were young I wrote in a paper journal in the five free minutes between when the kids went to bed and when they all got back up. Eventually there was more time so I could write for more than a few minutes. I wanted to write every day to give the kids a journal of their childhood. Since it was written in a paper journal, I figured that I would need to write at least three journals and they could decide who got each one, or someone could make copies so everyone could have all three. In reality I didn’t write every day. It just didn’t make it to the top of the list. Some days were better than others. As the kids got bigger my free time became the time that I was waiting for them in the car. I wanted to write, but didn’t want to take the journal out…if I lost it then our history was gone. I tried a notebook and then tried to re-write it into the journal. Writing it the first time was fun, re-coping it wasn’t. Then I went to notebook paper that I was going to put into a three ring binder. I wouldn’t need to carry the past writing with me and it wouldn’t need to be rewritten. I kept loosing the papers. Then I went to the computer. But I could only write at home. Eventually I got a Nook. It has worked so far. It is small enough to fit into my purse and the entries can be transferred to the computer. That was probably a lot more information than you wanted to know.

The original question was ‘how do I fit it in?’ I keep changing it as the kids change. I saw a journal for sale in a magazine last year. It was a line per day journal. I have heard from friends that they use this one. It gives them a sense of what was happening in their family over time, without making writing into a job. Right now I am trying to write every day. The kids are older and we are not in any big drama. The year that Maggie started high school I didn’t journal at all. She had a lot of papers to do. They all had to be typed and she had the computer all evening every evening. The most difficult thing for me is to find something to write about. I keep paper with me to write small notes about our day on. Some days we do the normal things and there isn’t anything new to write about so if something happens that I can blog about I want to remember it. Also the kids know that I write and they sometimes they say ‘hey mom, you could write about that.’ Some days I miss and don’t write. It happens. If I have a lot to say about many topics I will type them in and then post them each day. I like being ahead on posting, it relieves the stress.journal

Thursday 11/21/13 Thanksgiving traditions, Day 325/ 365…

We went to the mall last week. It is not even Thanksgiving and they have Christmas music playing. I love Thanksgiving and don’t like to see it skipped. It is my favorite non-religious holiday. We all get together and cook part of the meal together. There is something about having the whole family in the kitchen at the same time trying to cook. Everyone likes to take a turn mashing the potatoes. We also have some material that we lay out each year. We take a Sharpie marker and everyone writes on it what they are thankful for. At first it was easy. Most of us wrote things like we are thankful for our families. Some of us write more creative things like they are thankful for Google Chrome , weekends and the cat. It is difficult to think of new things each year. We starting thinking farther ahead each year to have something to write. We also put our name and the date by what we wrote. I am not sure if the kids write what the cats are thankful for. I will need to look.

thankful list
