10/29/13 William’s birthday!!! our kitty, Day 302/ 365…

Today is Williams birthday!!! He doesn’t get too excited about the birthdays themselves, but he likes the cake, ice cream and presents! We try to celebrate birthdays on the weekend, so that the kids don’t have to do homework after the party. This really doesn’t apply to William now that he isn’t in school. But, is has become a tradition and it is easier on all of us to get together when we are not rushed.

The little kitty got out again. The first time she was only outside, we believe, for a few minutes. Not long enough to get cold. The second time she was outside for a few minutes also. She used to look at us with playful eyes. Now she looks like she is planning. She has her claws, and might be OK outside, but we would miss her.

Saturday 10/26/13 new goals, posting meditating, calendars, driving test and Day 299/ 365…

I have made some new goals. One of them is to post every day. This one has not been going very well. I have been sick and haven’t made it onto the computer this week. My plan is to write during the week on my Nook and add the posts in on the weekends, to be released each day. Then if we have a lot going on, this goal can still be accomplished.

Another goal is to start to meditate. I have a Yoga VHS that has meditation on it so I…or we if the kids want to join in…can learn from this tape.

I also have a few family goals. One of the problems that I have is when a goal is made, I either loose the list of goals, or the goal gets lost on the family calendar and it never gets completed. We were at the store the other day and got calendars for 2014. We now have a second one for me that can be used for separate goals. We took the 2013 calendar and made a copy of the October, November and December pages.  Our main calendar has things like the kids school holidays and club events…like parades and dances. Years ago we had separate calendars for these things, school and goals, and it didn’t work. I don’t remember why. We went to having everything on one calendar and that didn’t work. We are now back to separate calendars. As long as we keep moving forward, that is what really matters.

Another goal is to get a copy of the driving rules of the road. My kids don’t have licenses yet. We are going to try reading a small section of the book at dinner after we read our devotional. It should only take a few minutes and help the kids feel more comfortable with the test.

These are a few of my current goals.

Wednesday 10/23/13 Emmaus Walk, cats and Halloween, Day 296/ 365…

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted in a while. I was on an Emmaus Walk last weekend. The week before it had been planned out very well so that all of the packing for all of us could be done, we would have time to eat dinner together and do all of our family activities. It didn’t work out. Everything went wrong. And the car broke down. Car engines really do smoke. Not to worry…the car got fixed and we all got packed. The kids went to grandmas for the weekend. The Emmaus Walk went well. I saw a lot of old friends and made a lot of new ones.

We are now settling back into our daily lives. One of our cats got out this morning. We have inside cats, but they do have claws. She was out all day. We found her outside under the deck when we got home. When we were getting her the second cat got out. This is the first time that these cats have been outside. Our last cat hated being outside, when the door opened he ran to the middle of the room. It was nice to know that he was always safe. These two cats are curious and is is difficult in the morning when we turn off the lights to leave so the house is dark and it is dark outside, we can’t tell if a cat has gone outside. Both of the cats are back in the house. It was a chilly day for the cat to be outside.

Beth has decided to be candy corn for Halloween. We found the white and orange duct tape at the first store, but it took about three more stops to find the yellow duct tape. It will be interesting to see how this costume turns out. She would have been warmer if she had chosen to go as Captain Fluffy, but it is her choice.

10/16/13 follow button and closed lockers, Day 289/ 365…

Did you see that there is a follow button on my blog? Cheer cheer. There is also an RSS feed and a link to my blogs Facebook page. These items were added by Sherryl Perry.  She did a great job, found out everything that I was looking for and had helpful suggestions. She charged a reasonable rate too. I would recommend Sherryl to anyone that needs some technical help with their blog. She also has a newsletter that is worth subscribing too. Beth’s locker at school won’t open. The problem started last week. Beth tried to get it open. Her friends tried to open it. She then went to the janitor. He has been working on it. It must be stuck really well. Today the janitor took off the latch that moves up and down. It still wont open. Tomorrow he is going to try to take the hinges off. They want to get it open without loosing the use of the locker. The problem is that Beth has all of her books and notebooks in the locker. She can’t study. If she had been younger, this may have been all fun, but she will have a lot of work to make up once the locker is opened.

10/15/13 saving tomato seeds, walnuts, Day 288/ 365…

We are going to try saving some seeds from our tomato plants this year. The plants are heirloom so the plants that sprout next year should be the same as the parent plant that we got the seeds from. This will be our first time saving seeds.
A few years ago we collected walnuts from a few trees in the area. When they fall off of the tree they have an inedible coating that is about one fourth to one half inch thick . We got directions on YouTube on how to get the covering and the shells off to get to the meat of the walnut. We started with about 30 plastic grocery bags of walnuts. There are so many walnuts in our area that is seemed like such a shame to have them go to waste. We ended up with about two inches of walnut meat in a gallon sized Ziploc bag. I don’t think that we will ever do that again, but I am saving some mesh bags to dry the walnuts in case we change our minds. If you do try this, I would suggest wearing two pairs of rubber gloves. We had a good time taking the outside covering off of the walnuts and later taking the hammer to the shells to get the walnut meat released. Now we understand why walnuts are so expensive.

Thursday 10/10/13 crunch challenge, school pictures, Day 283/ 365…

We have been talking about working on our 90 day crunch challenge. It is a sit up challenge. We start with five sit ups the first night and every day for ninety days we add five more sit-ups. So the second day we did ten and the third day we did fifteen. We were supposed to continue but instead after the first three days we took a three month break. Also the first three days were not consecutive. We do have the chart. I made a chart so that we can cross the days off as we go along. This saves us from having to remember how many sit ups to do each day. We have decided that at this rate we may be ninety years old and be doing two hundred sit-ups a night to finish the challenge.
Maggie had her school pictures last Friday, Beth has her pictures this Friday. When we get the picture forms I always know that we have made it. The kids are in school, we have school supplies, school clothes and back packs.  We can relax now.

Sunday 10/6/13 Halloween, ACT, art, Day 279/ 365…

Here are some random thoughts. I think that Beth has decided to be candy corn for Halloween, but there are still two weeks until the Halloween dance. We need to register Maggie and Beth for their ACT tests next week. We need to register them next week, the tests aren’t next week. We need to put the garden hose away for the winter and get our Halloween witch out and put her on the porch. She is one of the ones that looks like she has run into a telephone pole. The kids and I used to put the witch up each year when they were little. To them the witch was huge, so it took all four of us to carry her. Then we got her set on the porch. It probably only took fifteen minutes, but it was a lot of good memories. Now the kids don’t always have time to help put the witch up. I am not sure if it is because they have homework , or if is because they know that as soon as it is up , I will start saying ” Oh no, there is a witch on the porch” every time that we come home.
Our neighbor likes to decorate for Halloween. They always have a skeleton that looks like he is climbing out of the ground.scarecrow

Thursday 10/3/13 local events, cats, day 276/365…

We are always looking for more local places to go. We look at the local weekly newspapers that are available outside of the library a lot. The other day I was at a rest stop and saw all of the tourist information. There were a lot of pamphlets about single events and some thicker booklets about towns or categories…like a camping booklet. Some of the events had already happened this summer, but I took a pamphlet anyway. It may be an event that we can go to next year. There is a lot more to do in our area than I realized.

Our new cat is almost as big as our first cat. The first cat would like to sleep more, but the new cat thinks that she is a big time wrestler. The first cat ignores her as long as she can they she tries to say go away. The second cat plays more, thinking that the fun has begun. Our first cat still looks at us like ,”why did you bring her here?”cat

Wednesday 10/2/13 Halloween costumes, day 275/365…

The kids have been talking about Halloween costumes. Maggie wants to go as the girlfriend of one of the characters on ” The Big Bang Theory” she said that all she needs is a t-shirt with the girls picture on it. Beth wants to be a pirate. She still needs a sword…or…she may go a Captain Fluffy. She has fuzzy pants and a fuzzy hat. She went a Captain Fluffy a few years ago and the kids kept asking her if she was a pillow. Her newest choice is to go as candy corn she will need three rolls of duct tape to make this. William doesn’t dress up. Last year Beth went trick-or-treating. She hasn’t said if she will go this year.
We used to make the kids costumes when they were young. They went as Christmas presents…make sure that the box is the correct size or it won’t fit over their jackets or if it is too big they can’t hold their goody bag with both hands and sort of look like an Easter egg. We used to use a lot of tin foil, cardboard, saran wrap and tape. We looked forward to making the costumes each year. Now that they are older, the youngest is a junior in high school, they don’t have dress up days at school. But they do have Halloween dances.halloweenscarecrow
