Sunday 9/29/13 Follow button, winter jackets yard work, day 272/365…

I may have found the follow button on WordPress. Go to “Dashboard” on the main screen, then scroll to the bottom of the page. It should have a list of Plugins. One is a Facebook “follow” button. I have added it. If someone could subscribe and let me know if it works, I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

We tried on winter jackets the other day. The kids all have jackets that fit. I found one this week. We are set…before winter. The leaves are starting to change colors, it is still just a few bunches of leaves on some trees, but we are starting to see some beautiful colors.
We have started getting the yard ready for winter. The hedges on the front yard have been trimmed. They needed to be cut away from the house. The backyard was started but needs to be finished. We had a small garden that needs to be closed up for winter. Our yard is small, but this still takes time. Maybe this week we can finish it.

Thursday 9/26/13 senior year, day 269/365…

Maggie is now a senior in high school. We went to parent conferences tonight. Conferences always worry me. Overall my kids do OK, but week to week or even month to month as the homework and projects come and go, the grades are all over the place. This conference also included all of the things that are needed for her to graduate. It is not a long list, but I am concerned that if we miss something that only occurs once in the year, she may not be able to graduate. She took her ACT test last year, but she needs to take it again this year. She can take the SAT, but it is optional. She needs to schedule her classes next month for the next semester. She must get all of the ones that she needs to have enough credits of English, math…We need to find some baby pictures of Maggie. They have a slide show at graduation of the graduates and have current pictures and baby pictures. Her volunteer hours and cultural events for this semester are due December 9th. We added all of these things to the calendar. We need to look for baby pictures for Beth too. We will need them for next year.

Here is a picture of a fire hose. I know that my pictures don’t have anything to do with the post. Maybe someday they will, but for now they are just fun pictures. fire hose

Wednesday 9/25/13 computer lab…

I volunteered at Maggie’s school as a computer lab monitor today. This is watching the kids in the lab not helping. Just to be sure that it is basically quiet. So that means a few hours of quiet time. I always think light and pack heavy. Maybe I will only need my purse. But…in all of those hours it would be good to have my cell phone and its cord, and my Nook and its cord. My lunch should go and my water and if there is time before the labs open I can pay some bills in the car…there are hours to fill.
This morning everything was ready. And we leave. About a block away from the house I look into the seat next to me and see that my lunch is not there. We go back. We have a few minutes. I try to take everything that is going with us in the morning and put it in something with a handle. Then I wind my purse strap through the handles. If the purse goes then everything else will go too. Yes, I look like a dork, but only at home. Sometimes we go back home more than once…it isn’t always me, sometimes the kids forget things too. I am always waiting for the neighbors to come out and say “are you back again?”

Tuesday 9/24/13 writing, backpacks, day 267/365…

My days never seem to go the way that I plan them. Tonight the girls had youth group. I was going to write while they were there. Last weekend Maggie told me that she would need a back pack soon. We didn’t get to it so tonight she said that she needed one now. Maggie doesn’t like to miss youth group, so the backpack must have been a real mess. Last night Beth said that she was going to wear a skirt to youth group. That was nice, but some of her skirts are too short. We got in the car, picked up two of their friends for youth group. I realized that she was wearing a skirt. I couldn’t see the length while she was sitting down. We were already late. How did she get out of the house in a skirt without me seeing her? She trades her outgrown clothes with her friends at school so I am not there when she gets the clothes.  We got to the church, looked at her skirt, it was long enough and went to the store to get a backpack. Since we hadn’t planned on buying a backpack today, I didn’t have the money with me. The church is not in our neighborhood so we needed to find an ATM. We looked at the choices of stores while we looked for an ATM, that way if we found an ATM we would know the choices of stores. In the end…we did find an ATM and at the second store we found a backpack that she liked, was big enough and was in our price range. We took Maggie back to youth group. Crisis diverted.
There was another day about a month ago that I had planned to write but one of the kids had taken their phone charger cord outside to take with us in the car…now the part of the phone charger cord with the prongs comes off of the cord. The girls had been playing chase in the back yard and the plug in part had come off. They didn’t realize it was missing until we were on our way home. I am not sure why the charger went to the car, they don’t use it there. We spent the evening in the backyard with flashlights looking for the outlet part. We never did find it.
We should stop at the back door on our way out so I could say to the kids “what are you wearing and what are you taking” but we are always running too fast to do that.
I have good intentions to write, but we have a lot of life going on here. My posts would be better written if I had more time to write, but there wouldn’t be as much to write about. I like it this way.

Here is a cow that we saw last weekend.

Monday 9/23/13 hair cuts, winter jackets, donkeys and pumpkins, day 266/365…

Beth got as hair cut. She likes “high maintenance” hair. Her bangs hang in front of her face and are just long enough that they can’t stay behind her ear. She has to put her hair back all day long. The kids of her generation like this hair cut.

Fall is here. The leaves are turning colors. We need to try on our winter jackets and see how many pairs of gloves we have. We either are way ahead on trying on our winter things, or we…I …forget and we try them on the morning that we wake up and it is freezing out. We have a lot of left handed gloves. Where did all of the right handed gloves go? We buy a few pairs of one style of glove, in all the same color that way if we loose a glove we can still use the one that is left. Since we have lost all of the right handed gloves, we will need new gloves. We keep the unmatched gloves to use to shovel the drive and play in the yard if all of the matched gloves are wet.

Here is a picture of some donkeys and pumpkins. They are made out of straw. I think that they are donkeys…

Sunday 9/22/13 chickens, day 265/365…

We used to have chickens. I was texting with my niece today and the conversation about our backyards reminded me about our chickens. We had them for about a year. My kids called them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. At first the kids weren’t thrilled with the chickens. We live in the city. They saw the chickens as something that we should have because “we weren’t weird enough”. After a while the kids got used to seeing them and feeding them. When the chickens would get loose my kids and I would go round them up and put them back into their pen. The favorite place for the chickens to go when they escaped was across the street to the neighbors front porch. She had a table that the chickens would jump on and look into her front room. I am glad that she never looked out her front window and saw the chickens looking in. The neighbor kids liked them too. When the neighbors had friends over they all came over to see and hold the chickens. It was like a field trip.
We gave the chickens to a friend after about a year. In the summer they wouldn’t go back into their coop. They liked to stay outside in the sunshine. They go in on their own when it gets dark. It wasn’t safe for them to stay out, another animal may come over and eat them if they are outside. So…in the summer they had to be “convinced” to back into their coop. We get up early, I didn’t want to go out at dark and close the coop door. Trying to chase or catch them and place them in the coop was like having three more teenagers.

Here is a statue that we saw the other day. We went to a Wake for a friend and this statue was in the lobby.

Tuesday 9/17/14 guitar, science experiments, yard work and gum machines, day 260/365…

I never should have said in a recent past post that life has settled into a routine with the kids in school and I hope to have things to write about. After posting that I immediately got writers block.

The kids are in school. It is going well so far…Maggie had her first test in guitar class and passed. She can do the scales. Outstanding!!! Beth is doing experiments in science class. They were given eggs and some other items and needed to make a case around the egg so that when they dropped it from about four feet it wouldn’t break. They did an experiment today about the moisture content of popcorn. I am not sure how they did the measuring of the moisture, but I do know that they measured the cooking oil and popped the popcorn. Beth talked a lot about the popcorn experiment. She thought that it was cool.

We are in the lull before the storm. Summer is over and the homework has started, but there isn’t a lot of homework yet. We are holding our breath waiting for the calendar to fill up.

We started the fall yard work. We cut back the front hedges, and trimmed the flowers and the bushes in the back yard. Our yard isn’t big, but it always takes longer that we thought it would. It is best when William cuts the front hedges. When I cut them, they always look like eye brows.

Here is a gum machine that my kids like.

I need help. Does anyone know how to add “followers” to WordPress? I can’t find where to get the code. If anyone knows, please leave me a comment. I will really appreciate it.

Thursday 9/12/13 follow button and volunteering – Day 255/365…

I have been looking for a “follow” button for my blog since the blog was moved to WordPress. No luck so far. I can’t find one in their choices that has pictures of the followers and a total count of followers. There are some web sites with directions on how to add one . Their directions usually only have five steps, but I am lost by step two. There are many other blogs that use WordPress that have this button, so it is possible. I need a “follow” button so the search will continue. The reason that it is so important is that it sends an e-mail to the members when there is a new post. Then they know when to come to my site and read it. It also lets me know if people like my writing. When I get a button, I will let everyone know where it came from.

Maggie needs nine hours of volunteer time this year for her school. We volunteered tonight at our church. On Thursday nights the church has a free medical clinic, and a free dinner. We volunteered in the kitchen. We are mostly an outgoing family but it is still hard to go somewhere new. The people were really nice and found us a spot right away. When we got there people were at the door for the clinic and dinner. After we were done we had dinner.

Here is a chicken statue that we drove past today. This is a cool thing to pass in the car. These statues are fun to point out to the kids.

Wednesday 9/11/13 writing and 9-11…

Writing has been easy for a while. There is so much going on at the house, since school started. We have seen all of our old friends, gone to a few events and gotten school supplies. Now…things are quieting down, we have steady homework each evening. Talking about steady homework doesn’t make an exciting blog.
Now becomes the test. Can the blog stay interesting with less activity at home? We do try to keep events planned. It gives all of us something to look forward to. We also try to take a friend with us if we can. Having a new personality in our group is a nice change.

We had dinner together tonight. We usually do have dinner together but tonight it seemed…necessary. This is the anniversary of 9-11. A day when so many families were torn apart. Many families are tragically torn apart every day, but they are in situations where tragedy is a very possible ending. That doesn’t make their death less of a tragedy, but it isn’t as much of a surprise. On 9-11, these people, a lot of people, went to work in a safe town to do an office job. They were not at war in another country, or in a high crime neighborhood, or in a risky job. I think that is what shatters me. They were city people in a safe area. And there were so many of them. When the World Trade Towers fell, all of them could not get out. When I watched this tragedy I wanted to get home to my family to make sure that they were ok. I knew that they were safe, but the people in New York had been in a “safe” place too. It is the loss of trust in familiar places that bothers me. I just want to know that my family is safe.

Monday 9/9/13 William’s rocks…

When we were at the car show cleaning up one of the parents picked up her sons backpack. She made the comment how heavy it was. It reminded me of Williams backpack. When he was in grade school he collected rocks. At first it was rocks in our yard. We had a pile of cool rocks outside. Then we brought some of the coolest ones onto the porch. Later a few made it into the house. William also collected rocks during recess. He had piles at school of the coolest ones. Then the teachers started to help. They showed him new places to look and dig. Then the rocks started coming home. His backpack was heavy. I said that maybe the schools rocks could stay at school. I didn’t want him to carry that much weight each day. He said that the teachers said that it was OK to take them home. We had piles of rocks for years. As people came over they would ask about the pile of rocks on the porch. I would explain that William had collected them and they were the coolest ones he had found. William is older and we don’t have piles of rocks on the porch. I miss the piles.
